3.1 Introduction to APP programming for mobile devices
3.1.2 Development environment and programming languages

If you want to start coding an app for Android systems you can begin with Android Studio which provides an Integrated Development Environment IDE.

Android Studio offers:

  • Gradle-based build system
  • feature-rich emulator
  • Environment to develop for different android devices
  • Instant Run to push changes to your running app without building a new APK
  • Code templates and GitHub integration to help building common app features and import sample code
  • Testing tools and frameworks
  • Lint tools to catch performance, usability, version compatibility, and other problems
  • C++ and NDK support

The user guide is written in a simple language motivating beginners to start coding their first apps.

Starting to create your very first app is also possible by using block technology. This is much easier than learning a code language, however it also limits your possibilities. GoodBarber is an app toolkit provider. You get a 30 days trial when you register. The system enables you to develop an app quite easily with nice features for future users (user authentication, push notifications, monetization and more). Goodbarber offers different pricing strategies starting from € 32,-- a month.

In Chapter 2 we focus on App Inventor which is a development environment for Android systems provided by Google.
