1.3 Game elements
1.3.2 Game as systems

It’s useful to see games as systems. Systems are sets of items that can affect one another. The interaction among these set items can form patterns that are distinct from its individual parts. So the game system creates an experience as a sum of all the game parts.

Game system consists of 4 major elements:

  • Objects - refers to physical or abstract elements and variables within the system.
  • Attributes - these are properties that objects within the system can have.
  • Internal relationships - defines how objects in the system are related to one another.
  • Environment - context that surrounds the game system.
