1.3.6 Game elements: Procedures, rules and resources

Procedures are actions that player can perform to interact with the game. With the procedures you answer who does what, where, when and how in the game system.

Player actions as specified by procedures can be split up into the following:

  • Starting (How the game is put into play, also leading into onboarding of players)
  • Progression (These are the ongoing procedures running during gameplay)
  • Special (These are actions that are only available based on other elements and changes to the game state)
  • Resolving (These actions bring your game to an end)

Rules specify everything a player can and cannot do in your game.

When designing the rules, you have to think about all the possible player actions and reaction to the game plot, then putting boundaries where they should be and defining the game response to the player actions that are allowed.

Game procedures depends highly on the game rules.

In summary rules serve three main purposes:

  • Defining objects and conditions
  • Restricting player actions
  • Determining effects on players

Resources are objects that have a value for player and help to reach their individual objectives. Resources may be given and easy to obtain or they can be rare and required for specific actions to be used. Game designer has a chance to control the resources and their scarcity. Some of the common resources are:

  • Lives
  • Units
  • Health
  • Currency
  • Actions
  • Inventory
  • Time
