Educational Potential
Ultima online was one of the first MMORPG on the market. The Ultima universe were already quite popular as a PC game, therefore the positive resonance to its' online version was no surprise.

Playing ultima online is a little different from the offline versions. The player commands one character instead of a party of characters like when playing the PC version. Going on to fulfill different tasks the character gains strength, intelligence, velocity and other attributes. According to the chosen character, some are able to use magic and can learn different spells.

For role games it is essential to choose your race and class and build upon on these decisions the strategy for the game (quests have to be taken different for archers or for warriors) and both the evolution of the character (e.g. it doesn't make sense to give strength points to a wizzard to some extent and vice versa a high amount of intelligence points to a warrior).

The ultima universe is a complex one with many different landscapes, towns, villages, dungeons and even oceans. It is possible and necessary to learn how to read a map and use coordinates given during the game.

Ultima Online is a big world of gaming, it may not be easy for students to get into it without a decent amount of time playing and coaching. Teachers have to keep that in mind. Therefore the given task has to be very clear and limited so that not too much time is wasted.
Learning Object / Suggested activities with students
As ultima online is an Online multiplayer game a scenario could be to divide the students into different groups to fulfill some quests inline.

Therefore the students should discuss on how to create a working group (do we need elfs, wizards, healer or just warriors…) and decide for a strategy to complete the quest.

Skills and competences

Skills and competences acquired
It is necessary to read the guidelines about races and classes to build a suitable strategy.

Based upon the goal to achieve the strategy differs. A wizard can’t enter dungeons without decent equipment while a strong warrior will may be able to do so when he’s sure there less magical creatures to fight inside.

So understanding of the readings and usage of its pieces of information is essential on strategy building.
